Buying gaming pcs second-hand
A complete build is advertised by its best component and limited by its worst. A listing headlined with a strong graphics card can be sitting on a power supply that cannot feed it, a processor that bottlenecks it, or eight gigabytes of memory that makes the whole thing stutter regardless. Read the full spec list before you read the price, and price the machine on what is actually in it.
The advantage of buying a whole machine is that you can watch it work. Insist on seeing it boot and run something demanding for twenty minutes or more — long enough for temperatures to stabilise and for any thermal problem to show itself. A build that is fine for two minutes and throttling at fifteen is extremely common and completely invisible in a short demo.
What to check before you pay
- Get the full component list, including the power supply make and model, before discussing price.
- Watch it run under load for twenty minutes and check temperatures at the end, not the start.
- Confirm the memory is a matched kit running at its rated speed, not at base speed.
- Open the side panel: dust, cable routing and thermal paste age tell you how it was kept.
