Buying mice second-hand

Two faults account for almost every bad used mouse. The first is double-clicking, where a worn switch registers two presses from one — it develops gradually and is often intermittent, so a quick test misses it. The second is sensor skipping or jitter, where the cursor jumps during slow, deliberate movement. Both are testable in under a minute with a browser-based tool and neither is visible in a photo.

On a wireless mouse, add the battery. Rechargeable cells in mice are usually not user-replaceable, and a mouse that lasted three days when new and now lasts six hours is not going to get better. Ask how old it is and how long a charge holds in practice.

What to check before you pay

• Click each button thirty or forty times looking for a double registration.
• Move the cursor slowly across the screen and watch for jumps or jitter.
• On wireless, ask the real-world battery life now versus when it was new.
• Check the feet and the cable — both wear and both are cheap to replace.
