Buying servers second-hand
Used server hardware is extremely cheap for the compute you get, and there are two reasons for that. The first is noise: rack servers are designed for a machine room and use small, very fast fans that are genuinely unpleasant in a home or office. The second is power draw, which at Pakistani electricity prices can outweigh the purchase saving within a year.
If those trade-offs are acceptable, the hardware itself is usually in good condition and well documented. Check the drive bays and caddies are included, note that ECC memory is not interchangeable with desktop memory, and confirm that any RAID controller is in a mode you can use rather than locked to a previous configuration.
What to check before you pay
- Hear it running before you commit — server fan noise surprises almost everyone.
- Work out the real power draw at idle and at load, and price the electricity.
- Confirm drive caddies, rails and the RAID controller mode are all included and usable.
- Check the memory type — ECC and registered modules are not desktop parts.
